Federal prosecutors filed a motion for summary judgment ahead of a November trial over whether violence in Alabama’s prisons violate inmates’ Eighth Amendment protections against cruel and unusual punishment. “Alabama’s prisons are pervasively violent. Homicides, stabbings, beatings, and sexual assaults occur routinely,” the motion said. “Officers use excessive force. Alabama’s own conduct has created these conditions, and Alabama has failed to respond reasonably.”

A state board Thursday agreed to borrow almost $200 million to build a new 4,000 bed prison in Escambia County. The decision by the Alabama Corrections Institution Finance Authority increases the budget for the Escambia construction project from $700 million to $900 million, on top of more than $1.25 billion spent to build another 4,000 bed prison in Elmore County.

The private Alabama attorney William “Bill” Lunsford, individually and in his role as an appointed state Deputy Attorney General, has been paid $48.8 million defending the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) as of Aug. 5, and millions more of our tax dollars are headed his way. That staggering number, taxpayer funds paid to defend the state’s deadly, chaotic prisons, will skyrocket to $86.8 million if the latest contract increase request of $38 million by ADOC goes through as expected.
