Alabamians gathered Tuesday outside St. Clair Correctional Facility to demand the immediate termination of Lieutenant Roderick Gadson—a senior corrections officer exposed as a killer in the HBO documentary “The Alabama Solution.” They also demanded accountability for all other officers who have committed abuse inside Alabama prisons.

An insider tip to Charlotte Kaufman and Andrew Jarecki was the spark that ignited what would become a six-year investigation into Alabama’s deadly prison system. Over years of dogged research, the filmmakers exposed corruption, neglect, and violence in The Alabama Solution. Clandestine video—recorded by inmates on contraband cellphones—exposed inhumane conditions and the brutal treatment of prisoners.

Alabama is headed into an unusual week where Hollywood buzz, unlikely political alliances, and a searing prison documentary are converging to force new scrutiny of the state’s correctional system.

Stutts cited “The Alabama Solution,” an Academy Award-nominated documentary that used cell phone video taken by people in custody to document the violence within the prison system. “We all know about the violence, but it just had come to the forefront,” Stutts said. “The documentary about it brought it to everyone’s attention. But we have known the statistics.”

The critically acclaimed film is up for best documentary feature at the 98th Annual Academy Awards. Co-directed by Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman, the film chronicles the state’s maximum-security lockups using footage from inside prison walls taken by inmates on contraband cellphones.

“A film like this may generate such positive reception from critics (and audiences) in part because it disrupts fundamental myths about the way the U.S. criminal legal system operates to promote fairness and justice,” said Katy Naples-Mitchell, director of the Program in Criminal Justice & Management at Harvard Kennedy School.
